Quick Guide To Routine Infant Care

CARE DURING EARLY INFANCY

NORMAL DEVELOPMENT

Weight doubles by 6 mo and triples by 1 yr
height at 2 years is ½ the adult height
Social smile at 1-2 mo
head holding at 3-4 mo
rolling over at 4-5 mo
reaching for objects at 5-7 mo
sitting at 7-9 mo
standing with support at 9-12 mo
walking at 12-18 mo
makes meaningful sounds at 1 yr
speaks few words at 1 & ½ yr
small and big sentences between 2 & 3 yrs

IMMUNIZATION

Birth - BCG, OPV, HEP - B-1
6 weeks - DPT-1, OPV-2, HEP B-2
10 weeks - DPT-2, OPV-3
14 weeks - DPT-3, OPV-4
6 mo - OPV-5, HEP B-3
9 mo - Measles Vacc
15 mo - MMR
18 mo - DPT, OPV Booster-1
5 yrs - DPT, OPV Booster-2
10 yrs - TT, HEP B Booster,
12 years - MMR / R-VAC (girl)
16 yrs - TT


Optional vaccines
are :

HIB Vacc - 3 doses
Varicella vaccine - 1 dose
Typhoid vaccine - 1 dose every 3 yrs
Hepatitis A Vacc - 2 doses 6 mo apart

MANAGING FEVER IN A CHILD

Fever helps fight infection
Check rectal temperature in an infant
Do not cover or over clothe child
Keep windows open for ventilation
Put on the mother is confident fan
For fever above 103 degrees f sponge whole body with tap water or slightly warm ---water
Sponge for 15 - 30 minutes till temp returns to less than 100 degrees F
Medications like Paracetamol / Nimesulide / Mefenemic acid - give in correct
---dose
Treat the cause - antibiotics etc

ORS FOR DIARRHEA

ORS prevents and treats dehydration
ORS should be started with the first loose stool / vomit
ORS can be prepared at home:
1 liter water + 8 tsp sugar + ½ tsp salt
Give ORS frequently, as much as the child can take
Child must pass urine frequently
ORS must be given even if the child is vomiting
Rice kanji, dal water, coconut water, buttermilk, and barley --------water Can also be given
Breastfeeding should be continued
For severe dehydration iv fluids may be required
Continue ors till dehydration is better
Prepare fresh solution each day.
